The Great Minnesota Get-Together: State Fair Time from Crosslake

Noah Goedker ·

Every late summer, the whole state of Minnesota pulls toward St. Paul for a 12-day celebration we simply call the Great Minnesota Get-Together. The 2026 Minnesota State Fair runs from Thursday, August 27 through Labor Day, Monday, September 7, and for anyone living on the Whitefish Chain it is the perfect capstone to a long, lake-full summer. Whether you make it a day trip or stretch it into an overnight, a day under the grandstand is the reward at the end of the season before the lakes start to quiet down.

What the Fair Is All About

The Minnesota State Fair has a reputation that spreads far beyond our borders, and it earns every bit of it. For 12 days each year, the fairgrounds at 1265 Snelling Ave N in St. Paul become a celebration of everything Minnesota: our agriculture, our livestock, our food, our art, and our music. Locals call it the Great Minnesota Get-Together because that is exactly what it is. Neighbors you have not seen since last summer, old friends, and fellow lake people all seem to land in the same place for a few golden days at the end of August.

You can spend a day without ever running out of things to see. The Dairy Building serves up its famous all-you-can-drink milk, a tradition as much about the cool glass in your hand as the taste. The crop and seed art in the Agriculture Horticulture Building is a genuine Minnesota original, intricate portraits and scenes built grain by grain. The butterhead sculptures in the Dairy Building are a marvel of detail. Down on the grandstand, concerts and variety acts run through the whole run, and the creative and comedy stages are always worth stopping at. And then there is the food, the reason half the state shows up in the first place.

The Food on a Stick You Dream About All Year

Let us be honest about why the fair is on so many calendars. The food on a stick is the thing you think about all year, and the fair does not disappoint. The Pronto Pups, the golden cheese curds, and the famous Sweet Martha's cookies warm from the oven are the classics for a reason. You smell them long before you reach their stands, and somehow the line is always worth it.

The beauty of the fair food is that you do not have to pick just one. That is the point of a day there. You share a basket of curds, then a Pronto Pup, then a warm cookie (or a sleeve of them, which is really the only sensible way to do it). It is indulgent, a little ridiculous, and thoroughly Minnesota. That is the fair in a nutshell, and it is exactly what you want at the end of a summer.

Getting There from the Whitefish Chain

From Crosslake, the State Fairgrounds sit roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive to the southeast, down toward St. Paul. Route details can shift with construction and traffic, so it is always worth checking your preferred route the night before, but the drive is very doable as a day trip. If you leave early you can catch the grounds when the gates open at 7am, make a long day of it, and still be back up north in time to watch the loons settle in over the water.

The fairgrounds open at 7am and usually stay open until 11pm, with shorter hours on Labor Day itself. That gives plenty of room to pace yourself. For many families the day trip works perfectly: hit the road early, spend the day under the grandstand and on the Midway, then make the drive home in the cool evening air. Others prefer to turn it into an overnight down in the Cities, which lets you enjoy a full evening without the long drive back the same day. Both ways work, and both are a fun change of pace from a summer full of boats and beaches.

A Capstone to Lake-Country Summer

A day at the fair has become, for many lake families, the official end-of-summer tradition. You trade the dock for the Midway, the pontoon for the shuttle, and the quiet of the chain for the hum of twenty thousand happy people. It is loud and busy and wonderful, and it makes the quiet that follows even sweeter.

And that is the part lake people appreciate most. After a full day of crowds and noise and deep-fried everything, you get to come home. Not to a hotel, but back to the peace of the Whitefish Chain. You settle onto the deck, watch the last light go down across the water, and feel the lake work its calming magic all over again. That contrast, the bustle of St. Paul against the silence of the north woods, is what makes the whole tradition feel so perfectly Minnesota.

If the fair is on your list this year, plan your day, pack lightly, and go enjoy the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Then come back to the lake and let the summer end the way it should, slowly and peacefully, with the water right there at your doorstep.

12388 Brookwood Circle sits right in the middle of Crosslake's lake lifestyle, a warm home base to return to after a day at the fair. On the Whitefish Chain with a beautiful beach and an easy drive to the heart of town, it is the kind of place made for summers like these. Contact Noah for a showing.
